Kitchen Sinks: Faucets & Taps Overview
By: James Newell on Tue Mar 31, 2009
A kitchen sink is an essential part of your kitchen as it is used for washing utensils, which are sometimes put in the dishwasher as well. A sink is also used for washing vegetables and different types of meats prior to cooking them. It’s also a convenient place to wash your hands while you are using the kitchen. Most kitchen taps attached to the kitchen sinks are also a good source of drinking water. With so many uses of the kitchen sink, it’s essential to have a tough kitchen sink whose looks are not sacrificed and which blends with the rest of the kitchen.

Sizes Of Kitchen Sinks And Materials Used For Making Them

The normal kitchen sink has two 8-inch deep bowls and the overall size of the sink is 30 inches by 22 inches. However, you can find deeper sinks if you have special requirements such as if you use big pots, deeper bowls and other special items needed for washing and peeling vegetables. You can also go in for large sized single basins, odd-sized unequal basins and specially designed basins that would accommodate into tight corners.

A large variety of materials are used to make these kitchen sinks and you can also select the color, pattern and texture as per your taste or as per the surrounding environment of the kitchen. The most common material that is normally used for making kitchen sinks is stainless steel. It’s advisable to go in for a heavier gauge of stainless steel for a longer life. Enameled cast iron is also used as it is easy to clean and is available in a wide variety of colors besides being elegant and having a hard finish. It blends easily with the solid-surface countertop. The other materials that are used for making kitchen sinks include composite, soapstone and the latest type of concrete.

Kitchen sinks are used almost constantly as long as some activity is going on in the kitchen and as such they should not be made from decorative and delicate materials such as brass, copper and vitreous china. If you want easy installation, you can use self-rimming sinks that can be seated on the countertop but they tend to accumulate dirt at the seams. On the other hand, the under mount sinks remain cleaner but it is difficult to install them on the underside of the counter. Normally, kitchen sinks have four holes for fixing sprayers and faucets. Dispensers are also provided for hot water, purified water and liquid soap.

Installing a kitchen sink is not a difficult task as the manufacturers provide detailed instructions. They also provide templates so that you can mark out the area on your countertop where you want the kitchen sink and then you can cut it. Installing the sink will give you a lot of satisfaction. All that you need to do is to follow the instructions carefully. The most important criterion for choosing a kitchen sink is of course, the cost aspect.
