Kitchen Countertops: Remodel Your Kitchen
By: Kim Meehan on Fri Apr 24, 2009
If you have ever completed a kitchen remodeling project or if you have recently built a new home, then you likely know that kitchen countertops can be one of the most expensive aspects of designing this room. This aspect however, can be one of the most important. One of the first things that visitors look at in your kitchen are the tops of your counters. You always want them to be clean, organized and of course beautiful. Whether you opt for expensive materials or those on the lower side of the budget, choosing what will grace the tops of your cabinets is a very important decision.
First of all, you should always choose your kitchen countertops based on endurance and quality. After all, you will be spending much time in this room cooking, baking and cleaning. You want to ensure that the materials and style you have chosen are strong enough to last for the long run. You do not want to be replacing them again in just a few years. Ideally you would choose a style and material that will last at least as long as your cabinets and your major appliances.
You should keep in mind that while there are many colors and styles to choose from, the materials can often be very expensive depending on what you want. Marble for instance, is a material that while perfectly beautiful and strong, can cause you to need a second mortgage just to afford it. A better rule of thumb when choosing your new kitchen countertops is to determine what fits into your budget. Once you have decided on a total cost, you can begin to choose materials that fit within your budget. Once the materials have been chosen you can then choose styles, designs and colors.
You can, if you are prone to taking on remodeling projects, replace your kitchen countertops yourself. Many home improvement stores offer classes in different aspects of remodeling. You can also search on the internet to find detailed instructions and videos on how to change your counters yourself, without making mistakes that could cost a fortune to repair. Materials for your project can be purchased at home improvement stores or you can often find discounted materials at wholesale stores. Remember to make your choice based not only on your budget, but on the strength and durability of the materials that you are installing.
