Installing Kitchen Cabinets

After purchasing your new kitchen cabinets the challenge ahead of installing kitchen cabinets is waiting for you. If you are going to install them yourself you should have a little basic knowledge and the right tools needed for the job. The first things you will need to do are removing the old cabinets, and paint or apply whatever wall finish you want in your new room. It is easiest to paint prior to putting in your new cabinets and any touch up needed later will be easy.

Removing the old cabinets will require an extra set of hands or two. Removing the base cabinets first will give you lots of workspace and be a lot easier on your back when you remove the wall cabinets. The first thing you will want to do is remove the countertop. If you want to reuse the countertop, care must be taken to remove it. Remove all the drawers, shelves and doors. Inside the counter top will be brackets or bolts, you will need to remove them and hopefully they are not also glued to your cabinetry. If it is glued, try prying the counter to get it free.

Working neat and clean will help you keep organized and eliminate tripping accidents. Remove all unneeded debris as you go. Once the countertop is removed take out the cabinet bases. They will probably also be attached with brackets and drilled or nailed into the wall. Take care to not to destroy your walls when doing this, but if you do, they can be fixed. Once the base cabinets are out of the way the wall cabinets can be removed.

This is where your helpers will come in handy. Remove all door and shelves, and then start to unbolt the cabinets from the walls. Your helpers need to support the weight of the cabinets until you have them free from the wall. When you reach this point remove everything you do not need from the room if your new cabinets are the same size as the old one you can use a permanent magic marker and draw a level line across the same line as the old cabinets. Now you can paint or complete the wall treatment as the magic marker will show through the paint.

Using the old line as a guide you can hang the wall cabinets first. Mark your studs and pre-drill smaller holes or add anchors if manufacture recommends this. Your helpers need to support the cabinets as you mount the units on the walls, checking your level as you go. When completed you can start on the base cabinets. The biggest unit should go first unless there is a corner involved. If you have contracted a countertop company this is the time to call them because your work is done. Installing kitchen cabinets is a hard job but the satisfaction of your effort that made them possible makes all the difference.
